Pacific Partnership 2017 in coordination with the Da Nang People’s Committee, the city Boarder Guard and other forces hosted the first ever combined search and rescue (SAR) and oil spill response field training exercise (FTX) on the Han River in Da Nang on 13 May.

The exercise features a vessel collision scenario

The exercise, which featured a vessel collision scenario, was coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and also included partner-nation participants from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan.

According to this scenario, five nations on deck for ‘disaster’ on the Han River.  A cruise ship and a tanker collide and burst into flames, diesel fuel and oil are rapidly spilling into the Han River, five people are thrown into the water, one of the vessels starts to sink and first responders from five nations rush to the scene.

At the simulated collision, five role players were recovered from the water by Da Nang border guard vessels with crew and embarked service members from the U.S. and U.K. and brought to the pier for decontamination and medical treatment by the combined team of medical personnel.

Now in its 12th year, Pacific Partnership continues to enhance regional partnerships and host nation relationships through civil-military cooperation, medical exchanges, and inter-government agency coordination.
