According to Nguyen Thi Van Lan, the chairwoman of the support of the Da Nang Association for Disadvantaged Women and Children, about 87 families have been relocated to their new homes and another 39 families would be able to resettle by the end of the month – under the city’s low rental program for disadvantaged women.
“Though the women aren’t being granted ownership of these houses, they will have more freedom and be able to build their lives there,” Lan said.
The women benefiting from the program have many different stories.
Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, a resident of Da Nang’s Thanh Khe District, used to live in a cramped 12-square-meter room with her sister, father and two children.
They couldn’t believe that one day they would have a decent size home.
Le Thi Thuong and Le Thi Het, two sisters also from Thanh Khe District who make a living from selling lottery tickets, were extremely happy in their new homes.
For them, selling lottery tickets doesn’t earn them enough to live, let alone buy a house.
To qualify for the program, the women must be residents of Da Nang, poor single mothers and live in rented accommodation.
Unfortunately the number of women who qualify far exceeds the houses available. There are also plenty of women in extreme poverty who don’t meet the requirements. “For these women, it’s their dream to send their kids to schools and have a happy family,” Lan said.
“For us, our dream is coming up with enough funding to build these incredible homes.”
