This statement was made by the vice-director of the Danang Foreign Affairs Department Mr. Nguyen Nho Trung in his talks with reporters of The Nation (Thailand) and the Asian Development Bank on 3 August.

During their visit to Danang to get information and publicize the East West Economic Corridor (EWEC) and the preparations for “EWEC Week 2007”  to be held in Danang from 27 August to 2 September, the reporters met with the Danang Foreign Affairs Department and the Tien Sa Seaport.


Within the framework of the East West Economic Corridor Week 2007 to be held in Danang from 27 August to 2 September 2007, Deputy Prime Ministrer cum Minister for Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem will chair the EWEC Investment – Trade and Tourism Forum on 28 August 2007 at Danang’s Furama Resort. Co-chairs will include heads of the EWEC countries delegations, Chairman of the Danang PC, ADB, JICA, JBIC and JETRO.

Vietnamese Foreign Affairs Vice-Minister Vu Dung and a leader of the Danang Foreign Affairs Department met with major media in Hanoi on 19 July to inform of the East West Economic Corridor Week (EWEC Week) to be held in Danang from 27 August to 1 September 2007.

Right after the briefing, information about the East West Economic Corridor and EWEC Week was publicized by the mass media, including Vietnam Television, Vietnam News Agency, Tuoi tre, Thanh nien, Vietnamnet, VnExpress, and websites of the Vietnam Communist Party, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Information, and Enterprise Forum.


According to the Danang Organizing Committee of the East West Economic Corridor (EWEC) Week, 80 Vietnamese and nearly 20 foreign enterprises have registered to participate in the EWEC Trade and Tourism Fair. The Danang Department of Trade has worked positively with Vietnamese diplomatic representative agencies in Laos and Thailand to call for more participants. Related information and invitation have been sent to US, Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese and Korean enterprises.

As part of the EWEC Week to be held in Danang from 27 August to 1 September 2007, the Danang PC will cooperate with Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces and other localities to organize caravan tours along the east of the EWEC. The proposed route will be Danang – Tien Sa - Hoi An - Chu Lai - Dung Quat - Danang - Hue - Quang Tri - Savanakhet –Mukdahan – Lao Bao – Danang.

As the East-West Economic Corridor nears completion, hope is mounting here that the 1,450-km highway will boost traffic and jump-start the economies it traverses, but Japanese companies have yet to warm to its potential.

At least one-third of the $ 1.7 billion project, which links Vietnam and Myanmar through Laos and Thailand, was funded by Japanese economic aid. The entire road, whose design was conceived in 1998 by the Asian Development Bank, will be completed in 2008.


The East-West Economic Corridor stretching 1,450 km as a communication line links four countries together, namely Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and  Vietnam at Da Nang Port City. The section running through Quang Tri Province for 83.5km, from Lao Bao Border Gate to Dong Ha Provincial Town, and named Highway 9. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a master plan to develop Vung Ang Economic Zone in the central province of Ha Tinh as a general and multi-sectoral economic zone.

According to the master plan, to be implemented from now to 2025, the Vung Ang Economic Zone will consist of urban and industrial areas covering 10,000ha of nine communes in the Ky Anh District, including Ky Nam, Ky Phuong, Ky Loi and Ky Long communes.


Typhoons which have become more frequent lately have not stopped Vietnam from being a tourist destination for land 'caravan tourists' which is booming.
